Financial Aid Myths...#GetYourMoney

Students and their parents often mistakenly believe that they won't be qualified for financial aid. Here are some common misconceptions, and the TRUTH about the FAFSA and California Dream Act applications.

I'm not a citizen or resident, so I'm not eligible.
- False. If you are not a citizen or have permanent resident status, you are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, but you may be eligible for Cal Grants and institutional grants. That's why you need to fill out the California Dream Act application!
My parents make too much money, so I won't get any.
- False. While it's true that you won't qualify for a Pell Grant if your parents make more than $50,000 per year, the Cal Grant income ceilings are much higher. For example, if there are four people in your house, your parents must make less than $106,000 per year for you to be eligible. More people? Higher number. Don't assume until you check with me. Furthermore, many institutional scholarships and grants are not based on income, but rather career interest or field of study. Even the California Community College Promise Grant, which every first-time, full-time freshman gets, requires that you complete the FAFSA or Dream Act application.
My parents aren't documented, so I can't apply.
- False. Even if your parents aren't documented, if you are a citizen or resident you can complete the FAFSA and get grants. There's a special way to apply, so see Surber for help.

San Francisco City College Stem Cell Culture Day

On October 8th, eleven of Ms. Swarner's Biotechnology students attended the stem cell culture day at SF City College. Students worked with automatic serological pipets, inverted microscope, Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) stem cells, laminar flow hoods and more! Students viewed CHO cells prior to fluorescence, then they cleaned, aspirated and added dye to stem cells. During the 30 minute incubation, students interviewed professors, graduates from UC Santa Cruz, and community college students on careers in science and pathways to get there. After 30 minutes students viewed the stem cells. Viable cells were fluorescent and were viewed using the inverted microscope. This incredible opportunity exposed students to careers, summer course opportunities, and they had an amazing day at SFCC!

CATvisory College Fair

Students had a chance to visit with representatives from Santa Rosa Junior College, Napa Valley College, Pacific Union College, Grand Canyon University, Sonoma State University, Cal Maritime, and Washington State during our first ever CATvisory college fair. Afterwards, students were invited to stay and have lunch with the Puerta and Educational Opportunity Program representatives from Sonoma State to learn about these valuable programs available to first generation college students.

Careers in Construction Opportunity Fair

Mr. Parry & Ms. Surber took several construction students to the Careers in Construction Opportunity Fair hosted by the North Bay Construction Corps. Students learned about the many benefits of a career in construction and had an opportunity to speak with industry professionals from various trades.
